Teosyal vs Juvederm: Which Filler Should I Get?

Teosyal and Juvederm are popular brands of injectable dermal fillers.

The Teosyal family consists of several soft tissue fillers, each designed to target a specific treatment area. This includes Teosyal Meso, Teosyal Touch Up, Teosyal First Lines, Teosyal Ultra Deep, Teosyal Kiss, Teosyal Deep Lines and Teosyal Global Action. Teosyal is developed by the Switzerland-based Teoxane Laboratories.

The Juvederm collection is also comprised of a number of soft tissue fillers. The two most popular ranges in the Juvederm range are Ultra and Vycross, each of which use patented technologies to create unique cosmetic fillers. Juvederm fillers are produced by Allergan, a multinational pharmaceutical corporation based in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.

What are these fillers made of?

Teosyal and Juvederm has essentially the same active ingredient—hyaluronic acid.

Juvederm is made of non-animal, cross-linked hyaluronic acid which is highly cohesive. The concentration of hyaluronic acid in Juvederm dermal fillers ranges from 15mg/g to 24mg/g. Apart from that, some Juvederm fillers (such as Juvederm Ultra) consist of 0.3% of lidocaine, which acts as a local anesthetic agent. Similarly, Teosyal fillers are 100% hyaluronic acid-based. The hyaluronic acid in the Teosyal dermal fillers is also derived from a non-animal origin and is fully resorbable.

Naturally found in the skin and cartilage, hyaluronic acid is a linear polysaccharide made of repeating units of disaccharide (e.g. D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-glucosamine). The amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases with advancing age, resulting in the formation of signs of aging e.g. volume loss. Having water retention properties, hyaluronic acid is able to swell up in water, thereby exerting its volumizing and smoothing effects. Lidocaine is a compound known to have anesthesia effects. It is believed that it induces local anesthesia by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels (and hence, blocking ionic fluxes).

How is Teosyal different from Juvederm?

Teosyal is similar to Juvederm in many ways. Both fillers are able to retain the moisture in the skin while keeping it healthy, fresh and soft. Having pretty much the same mechanism of action, both Juvederm and Teosyal deliver dramatic yet natural looking anti-aging results.

Considering their similar active ingredients, it should come as no surprise that Teosyal and Juvederm have similar indications. Teosyal is used to treat wrinkles and lines (including nasolabial lines) and to enhance facial contours and definition. Additionally, it can be used to contour the cheeks and augment the lips. Teosyal Kiss, which is specially designed for the lips, delivers volumizing results that look and feel natural. More importantly, it outlasts other similar products on the market.

Juvederm is indicated for the correction of superficial to severe facial lines, volume loss, lack of contours, dehydration and uneven skin tone, and lip augmentation.

Both Juvederm and Teosyal are CE certified, which means they have been tested for safety and efficacy. Juvederm also holds FDA approval for some soft tissue fillers in the collection. Regardless, both fillers are used worldwide and are considered safe and effective for treating a variety of age-related concerns. Unsurprisingly, one of the biggest pitfalls associated with filler treatments is practitioner inexperience, which could lead to an increased risk of complications and unsatisfactory results. Therefore, it is important to have fillers injected by an experienced, board-certified practitioner.

In terms of durability, both brands offer fillers that can last up to 18 months or more.

So, which is the better filler?

Teosyal and Juvederm are similar in many aspects. Both of them contain natural ingredients and are administered via a minimally invasive procedure.

There is no single product that works for everyone. Each patient has unique needs and, therefore, require different treatments. When choosing the most appropriate treatment, it is important to consider factors such as patient preferences, treatment area and the experience of the practitioner.

Regardless of the type of fillers, it is important to manage patient expectation (which is the key to happy patients). Prior to injection, it is important to set up an attainable goal and educate yourself about the treatment limitations. Always seek treatment with a licensed injector, so you can enjoy a more youthful you.
