Marionette Lines Treatment with Juvederm

What are marionette lines?

Marionette lines are the vertical lines that run from the corner of the mouth down to the jawline along the chin. They get their name due to their resemblance to the chin of marionette dolls. On humans, these lines can make people appear old or even unhappy. As these lines usually develop due to aging, they can also be accompanied by dry and dull skin that further contributes to a tired, aged appearance. Due to their proximity to the mouth, these lines are often associated with the facial expressions we make, from smiling to pursing our lips, and are therefore often confused with smile or laugh lines.

What causes marionette lines?

There are many factors that contribute to the development of marionette lines in the skin. As previously mentioned, repeated facial movements—or, more specifically, movements with the lips and mouth—can play a role, as can sun exposure and environmental or lifestyle factors such as smoking and stress. However, the primary cause of marionette lines is aging. As the body ages, the skin loses key proteins such as collagen and elastin, as well as hyaluronic acid, which helps keep the skin plump and hydrated. As the production of these substances slows, the supporting structure within the skin weakens, leading to looser, drier skin that can sag. The result of this sagging and looseness are lines and wrinkles, and in the mouth and chin area, this presents itself as marionette lines.

Is Juvederm effective on marionette lines?

Juvederm offers 2 products that indicated for the treatment of marionette lines. Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure XC are hyaluronic acid-based fillers that add volume to the skin upon injection in order to smooth lines and folds in the nose and mouth area. The hyaluronic acid gel binds with water, causing the skin to become plumper, which in turn effectively fills in depressions, such as creases and folds, including marionette lines. The Juvederm product line is particularly effective at providing natural looking results by offering subtle effects. Should overcorrection or an adverse reaction occur, Juvederm fillers are also easily reversible upon injection of the enzyme hyaluronidase, making it a very safe choice.  Juvederm also provides long-lasting effects, making it a popular choice among medical practitioners and patients alike.

How long do results last?

With Juvederm injections, patients are able to see instant results that are long-lasting. The duration of results will always vary by patient, depending on factors such as age and lifestyle of the patients, the injection technique used during implantation, and the severity of the correction. As the results are very dependent on the manner in which the filler is administered, it is imperative to have a medical practitioner who is knowledgeable and experienced with dermal fillers treatment. Studies have proven that the result of Juvederm treatment can last for 1 year up to 18 months with optimal treatment, depending on the specific product. Patients can also receive touch-up treatments to maintain results.
