Sculptra is a soft tissue implant manufactured by Q-Med AB. This dermal filler is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) microparticles. This synthetic medical-grade injectable is completely biodegradable once implanted in problematic skin regions. The dermal filler comes in 2 transparent vials containing a dry powder of 150mg of PLLA, 90mg of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, 127.5mg of mannitol.
The powder must first be reconstituted with 5ml of sterile water prior to injection. Also, only approved physicians experienced with dermal filler injections are legally permitted to administer this product on patients.
Sculptra is renowned worldwide as an effective collagen stimulator and dermal filler. The injected PLLA particles encourage collagen production over a period of time, which restores the lost protein and diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Sculptra was was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for correcting facial lipoatrophy (facial fat loss) caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in 2004. Since then, it has also been approved by the FDA for correcting nasolabial folds and other noticeable facial skin depressions.
Facial lines form as a result of biological aging exacerbated by the oxidizing agents in external aggressors, such as smoking, pollution, and excessive sun damage. As well, underlying medical conditions, like HIV, can also cause facial fat loss.
Sculptra is an injectable solution made of PLLA particles. These microparticles act as a biostimulator. Once implanted, the particles encourage new collagen cell growth. Over time, the particles will be completely disintegrated leaving behind the naturally produced collagen and a reinforced skin structure. Depending on the amount of lost collagen, a patient may need more than 1 injection.
The collagen-stimulating implant is composed of PLLA particles. This polymer is synthetic and nontoxic, as well as being biocompatible and biodegradable. It has been used in the medical field for many years as material for sutures, orthopedic screws, pins, and plates.
Unlike other fillers, this brand delivers improvements gradually as it strengthens skin from within. Poly-L-lactic acid particles encourage the growth of collagen fibers for long-lasting, youthful effects. Even after the PLLA particles have disintegrated, the skin remains plump and younger due to the new collagen fibers.
The collagen-stimulating properties of this filler is suitable for most skin types. It is indicated for:
On average, patients needed 3 injections over the course of 3 to 4 months for the best results. The number of injections will vary on an individual basis.
Patients should not receive treatment with this filler if they have an active infection or the skin is inflamed around the intended treatment area. As well, patients prone to developing raised scars should not receive this treatment.
Patients tend to recover completely within a few days after procedure. However, serious aftereffects have also been reported by patients.
These events were not reported as serious by a clinical trial investigator.
Sculptra is a collagen-stimulating implant that reinforces the skin by producing more collagen fibers. Unlike other fillers, the effects are not immediately visible, as new cell growth happens over a few months. Because of this, the aesthetic improvements last for a longer period of time. As well, this filler does not require a skin test and side effects have been reported to be mild.
