Euflexxa® Viscosupplements

What are the products by this brand?

Euflexxa is a bioresorbable, sterile, and viscoelastic intra-articular gel consisting of sodium salt of synthetic non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid to alleviate painful symptoms of osteoarthritis.

The active constituents in this injectable gel are:

  • 1: 10mg/ml of sodium hyaluronate;
  • 2: 8.5mg/ml of sodium chloride;
  • 3: 0.56mg/ml of disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate;
  • 4: 0.05mg/ml of sodium dihydrogen phosphate dehydrate;
  • 5: Water for injection.

All the ingredients above are formulated into a viscoelastic gel and is supplied in 3.2ml syringes.

This implant is intended to be administered in a series of 3 injections over a course of 3 weeks for adequate correction. Note that only legally certified medical practitioners who are familiar with injecting viscosupplements can handle this medical device safely. This orthopedic implant is a product of Ferring Pharmaceuticals, an American company specializing in human medicine.

Usually, degenerative diseases of the joints are treated using pharmacological therapy, as it is the quickest option. However, painkillers merely suppress pain and inflammation without improving joint health. Non-drug therapy, like physical therapy, rehabilitation gears, and supplements, may not provide adequate correction. Euflexxa acts as a viscosupplement that eases symptoms of osteoarthritis by improving joint health altogether. The gel lubricates affected joints to improve movements and mechanical support effectively.

How long has it been on the market?

This orthopedic injectable was first launched in December 2005 by Ferring Pharmaceuticals. A year earlier, the implant was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for alleviating knee pain caused by osteoarthritis in patients who have not found adequate relief from conservative pharmacological therapy and alternative disease managing methods.

How does it work effectively?

A joint is a point where 2 or more bones meet. Synovial joints are the most well-known due to their extreme flexibility. The ends of bones within a synovial joint are encased with a protective articular cartilage that self-lubricates. During movement, the cartilage continuously secretes synovial fluid for smooth joint movement. The lubricating fluid also acts as shock absorber to reduce impact on the joints.

However, years of wear-and-tear breaks down the integrity and performance of articular cartilage. As well, the secretion of synovial fluid dwindles drastically. The bones are also left exposed and tend to grind against each other with immense friction. Hence, movements are very painful and limited. Euflexxa is composed of hyaluronic acid gel with similar viscoelastic properties to natural synovial fluid. Following intra-articular injection, the gel protects the bones from painful friction and cushions the joint from impacts. Movements are much smoother with lesser pain and discomfort.

What are the active ingredients that make the brand unique?

Euflexxa is composed of sodium salt of non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid gel. Though it is non-crosslinked, the gel is still highly viscous and elastic, which helps to improve joint health and functionality.

Why is it different from other brands?

Compared to other brands of orthopedic implant, Euflexxa® consists of bioengineered hyaluronic acid. The molecules are derived and purified from controlled a bacterial fermentation process. The absence of any animal proteins and reticulating agents minimizes the risk of hypersensitivity.

What skin type is it suitable for?

This bioresorbable viscosupplement is indicated for alleviating knee pain associated with osteoarthritis in patients who have failed to respond to traditional joint disease therapy (e.g. painkillers, supplements, rehabilitation gears, physical therapy, etc.).

What are some of the side effects?

Some patients have reported slight reactions following treatment session.

Common side effects:

  • Pain and swelling in treated joints
  • Bruising in treated joints
  • Back pain
  • Muscle pain

Fortunately, these reactions are mild in nature and should abate within a couple of days. Educate your patients of appropriate aftercare methods, including avoiding strenuous activities (e.g. tennis, running, etc.) and standing for too long, to reduce downtime.

Rare side effects:

  • Cough
  • Swollen eyelids, face, and lips
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hives
  • Dizziness
  • Wheezing

The reactions above are serious and require immediate treatment at the nearest hospital.

Why should you choose Euflexxa®?

Euflexxa is a bioengineered viscosupplement free from any animal proteins and reticulating agents, approved by the FDA for the treatment of knee pain due to osteoarthritis. Patients who are allergic to avian-based products can opt for this brand to improve their joint health.
