When you hear the phrase bacterial neurotoxin, you might be surprised to learn that these potent poisons, derived from bacteria, can play a key role in helping you look younger! In fact, a potent toxin from C. botulinum bacteria forms the basis of the blockbuster beauty treatment Botox and a host of other products and medications.
What Is It For?
Botulinum toxin is not just suitable for lines and wrinkles - it’s useful in combating other types of conditions that rely on muscle relaxation:
Neurological disorders, including head, neck and limb spasms
Incontinence and other bladder disorders
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
Strabismus (eye spasms)
Plastic surgery-related applications include:
Vertical frown lines (glabellar lines)
Crow’s feet (wrinkles in the corners of the eyes)
How Do They Work?
The human body contains three types of muscle tissue: cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle. As you might intuit, ...
Even when well rested, many people present with dark undereye circles that lead them to seek out procedures for improving their appearance.[i] Due to the demand for less costly, minimally invasive options, there are several non-surgical methods available for correcting the infraorbital area.[ii] Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are frequently used for this purpose – they are injected into the lower eyelid area to fill the tear troughs and freshen up the face. This area can be difficult to treat as the skin is unforgiving and it is hard to hide overcorrection. The Palma Technique was developed to address this concern by reinforcing the skin and tissue under the infraorbital area.
A complex and high-risk area
There are several structures in the infraorbital area that make it more susceptible to aging, such as the fat pads, septa, muscles, and blood vessels. All of them contribute to looking healthy and well-rested but deteriorate with age. This can result in uneven skin tone and vo ...
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin that disrupts the chemical signals between muscles and the brain upon injection. Botox is injected into the muscle of the area affected by the issue being treated. Once the neurotoxin takes effect, which typically takes a few weeks, the muscle that was injected will be temporarily paralyzed. Botox is able to block the transmission of neurosignals between the muscle and the brain, so the muscle does not receive the message to contract. The effects provided by Botox are temporary, typically lasting around four to six months, though the duration of results depends on a number of factors, including the age of the patient and the issue being treated. Patients should not receive Botox injections or any other botulinum toxin product more often than once every three months. At this time, there have not been many studies regarding the risks of using Botox while breastfeeding is not typically recommended.
When is Botox used?

Botulinum toxin is derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. In humans, it acts as a neurotoxin, effectively blocking the transmission of neurological signals between the brain and any muscle in which the toxin is injected.
There are eight types of botulinum toxin, types A through H, and two of those types - A and B - are sold commercially and medically for use in humans. The most well-known and popular commercially available botulinum toxin product is Botox, which contains botulinum toxin type A. Other botulinum toxin type A products include Dysport and Xeomin. Botulinum toxin type B is available as Myobloc.

Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are predominantly used in the treatment of wrinkle correction, such as nasolabial folds and, of course, marionette lines. Juvederm Ultra is primarily indicated for the treatment of mild and moderate lines, while Ultra Plus is used for deeper marionette lines. Juvederm Vollure is also used to correct superficial marionette lines. This particular filler is much thinner in viscosity compared to Ultra and Ultra Plus; therefore, it is best for superficial lines. The thinness of the gel also lowers the possibility of over-plumping, ensuring natural results.
Radiesse, on the other hand, does not offer a variety of fillers. It comes in one formulation with or without lidocaine. The Radiesse dermal filler is, nevertheless, used to treat marionette lines effectively. This dermal filler has been proven great regarding the restoration of elasticity and collagen in this area of the face, which makes it minimally invasive and long-lasting. It i ...
Part of the Restylane family, Restylane Lyft is developed by Galderma, a healthcare company based in Switzerland. The filler is incorporated with lidocaine (otherwise known as lignocaine), which helps to reduce injection-related pain and discomfort. The Juvederm range includes many fillers, each has its own target areas. Juvederm is created by the Dublin-based Allergan. Similar to Restylane Lyft, some Juvederm fillers are formulated with lidocaine, or lignocaine, as a local anesthetic. A comparable filler in the Juvederm range is Juvederm Voluma.
Restylane Lyft vs Juvederm: Target Areas
Both Restylane Lyft and Juvederm fillers are intended for adult patients over 21 years of age. Restylane Lyft is an FDA-approved dermal filler that is indicated for the correction of mid-face contour deficiencies caused by aging. The filler is also used by doctors to improve volume deficits in the ...
ArteFill (otherwise known as Bellafill) is a type of permanent filler developed by Artes Medical, a California-based medical technology company. ArteFill is made of small and synthetic microspheres that are suspended in purified bovine collagen. Being non-resorbable, the microspheres are resistant to the metabolism process in the body. As a result, ArteFill lasts substantially longer than other conventional dermal fillers. To date, ArteFill is the only permanent filler that has obtained FDA approval.
Juvederm, on the other hand, is a brand of hyaluronic acid-based fillers that restore lost volume and soften facial lines. While the results of these fillers are long-lasting, they are not permanent. Juvederm is owned by Allergan, a multinational pharmaceutical company that is based in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.

Voluma is from the popular Juvederm range produced by Allergan. Injectable fillers such as Voluma are widely used in aesthetic medicine and can give the face a younger looking, smoother, and fuller look. While they are made of the same active ingredients, there are some differences between Voluma and other Juvederm fillers in terms of their target areas.
Voluma vs Juvederm: target areas
In comparison to other Juvederm fillers, Voluma has a considerably thicker consistency, which contributes to its unique lifting properties. This also leads to the differences in its target area. While Juvederm Ultra Plus also has a thicker consistency than Juvederm, it is not as thick as Voluma. Voluma is intended to be administered into the deep dermis. It should be deposited right on top of the bones in the face. For best results in the cheek, Voluma should be injected into the chin, the middle cheek, or the upper cheek. The filler is ideal for volumizing and lifting the mid- and upp ...
Both Belotero and Juvederm are brands of injectable dermal fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid. They address the major signs of aging, helping patients to achieve a more youthful-looking appearance. Despite their use of hyaluronic acid, there are some fundamental differences between the fillers of these brands.
While the fillers in both brands are made of hyaluronic acid, Belotero fillers have a lower density hyaluronic acid, making them better options for treating finer wrinkles and lines than most Juvederm fillers. The Belotero family of fillers are comprised of different formulations of hyaluronic acid with varying consistencies. Some of them are suitable for the treatment of deep folds, while others are ideal for correcting very fine lines. Each filler in this brand has a specific target area it is ideal for; for example, certain Belotero fillers are perfect for cheekbone enhancement, lip augmentation, and facial contouring. Belotero fillers are designed to be administered via ...
Despite having different concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, Restylane Silk and Juvederm products contain essentially the same key ingredient. Consisting of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-glucosamine as repeating units, hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar that is abundantly found in the skin and cartilage. Having water retention properties, it is able to attract water, thereby improving dermal volume and reducing the look of wrinkles. In contrast to collagen, which is a protein, hyaluronic acid is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. The hyaluronic acid particles in Restylane Silk are smoother and softer than that of the Juvederm fillers; this helps to deliver subtle, natural-looking results.
Lidocaine induces local anesthesia by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels and blocking ionic fluxes.
